Navigating COVID-19 with Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease: My Journey and the Hidden Dangers

Charity Harris

As someone living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease (CMT), my health journey has been marked by various challenges, but none as daunting as my encounters with COVID-19. Recently, I've contracted COVID-19 for the third time, and although this bout has resulted in "just" chest congestion, my initial experience with the virus was nearly fatal. I hope that by sharing my story, I can shed light on the hidden dangers of COVID-19 for those with neuromuscular diseases like CMT and underscore the importance of vigilance and care.

My First Battle with COVID-19: A Near-Death Experience

My first encounter with COVID-19 was harrowing. The virus was attacking my body, and I didn't even know. I went to urgent care for chest pains and was shocked to discover I was positive when I tried everything I could to stay safe. I did not leave my house very much at all in 2020 and 2021. Getting Covid in 2022 was devastating. I was hospitalized, and on my first night, I was unresponsive for over three hours. The situation was dire, and my life hung in the balance. The fear and uncertainty during those moments were indescribable, not only for me but also for my loved ones who stood by, helplessly waiting for updates and praying for my recovery.

Understanding the Risks: COVID-19 and Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease

Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease (CMT) is a hereditary neuromuscular disorder that affects the peripheral nerves. These nerves control muscle movement and sensation, particularly in the arms and legs. People with CMT often experience muscle weakness, atrophy, and sensory loss, making them more susceptible to various complications.

When it comes to COVID-19, the risks are significantly heightened for individuals with CMT due to several factors:

1. Respiratory Complications: CMT can weaken the respiratory muscles, making it harder for those affected to clear secretions and fight off respiratory infections. COVID-19, primarily a respiratory virus, can exacerbate these issues, leading to severe complications like pneumonia and respiratory failure.

2. Immune Response: While CMT itself does not directly impact the immune system, the overall health and muscle weakness associated with the disease can make it more challenging to mount an effective immune response. This can result in a prolonged illness and increased risk of severe outcomes.

3. Mobility and Fatigue: The fatigue and muscle weakness characteristic of CMT can make recovery from COVID-19 more difficult. Prolonged bed rest and inactivity during illness can further weaken muscles, complicating rehabilitation and recovery efforts.

My Continued Battle and the Importance of Vigilance

Despite having had COVID-19 twice before, my recent infection has brought back memories of that initial, terrifying experience. Thankfully, this time, my symptoms are less severe, limited to chest congestion. However, it serves as a stark reminder of how unpredictable and dangerous this virus can be, especially for those of us with underlying conditions like CMT.

Living with CMT means that we must always be vigilant about our health. Here are a few steps that have been crucial for me:

1. Adhering to Safety Protocols: Wearing masks, practicing social distancing, and maintaining good hand hygiene are essential. These measures help reduce the risk of contracting the virus.

2. Regular Medical Check-Ups: Keeping in close contact with healthcare providers ensures that any changes in health are promptly addressed. It also allows for timely interventions if COVID-19 symptoms arise.

3. Strengthening Immune Health: A balanced diet, adequate sleep, and regular, gentle exercise tailored to my abilities help keep my body as resilient as possible.

4. Vaccination and Boosters: Staying up-to-date with COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters provides an added layer of protection against severe illness.

Moving Forward with Hope

While the threat of COVID-19 remains, I am hopeful. My journey with CMT and COVID-19 has taught me the importance of resilience, the value of a strong support system, and the necessity of taking proactive steps to safeguard my health. For those with CMT and other neuromuscular conditions, understanding the risks and taking preventative measures is key to navigating these challenging times.

By sharing my story, I hope to raise awareness and encourage others in similar situations to remain vigilant and prioritize their health. Together, we can navigate the complexities of living with CMT and face the challenges posed by COVID-19 with strength and determination.
